This is the recommended 3-day desert tour from Marrakech for travelers who want to spend a full day in the Merzouga desert instead of just passing through. The key difference compared to the standard 3-day circuit is that Day 1 goes directly to Merzouga — skipping the overnight stay in the Dades Valley — so both nights are spent in the desert and Day 2 is fully dedicated to exploration.
A visit to a nomadic family, Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, the Bird Lake, and a sunset camel ride make Day 2 one of the most culturally rich days of any Morocco tour. Day 3 returns via the Draa Valley and Agdez.
Days 1 and 3 involve approximately 9 hours of driving each.
Early pick-up from Marrakech. Crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass, panoramic stop at Ait Ben Haddou, and lunch en route. Long afternoon drive through Ouarzazate to Merzouga, arriving at sunset.
Overnight in a riad in Merzouga.
Sunrise from the riad terrace overlooking the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast, a 4×4 journey deeper into the desert to visit a nomadic Berber family — sharing tea in their tent and experiencing a traditional way of life unchanged for generations. Continue to Khamlia village for Gnawa music performance with Sub-Saharan roots from Sudan and Mali. Visit the Bird Lake if conditions allow — a seasonal lake attracting flamingos and migratory birds.
Lunch at a local restaurant, then camel ride to the luxury desert camp. Campfire, dinner, drum music, and a sky free of light pollution.
Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
Sunrise in the desert. Return by camel or 4×4 to the village. Journey back to Marrakech via the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest river, lined with palm groves and kasbah ruins along the road. Stop in Agdez for a panoramic view of the valley. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Cross the High Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech.
End of the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.
