GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Eight days from Tangier to Marrakech — the most complete tour in this category. The main difference compared to the 7-day itinerary is Day 5, which is fully dedicated to exploring the Merzouga Desert: a visit to the Gnawa village of Khamlia, an off-road excursion to the abandoned M’Fis mines, a meeting with a Berber nomad family in their traditional tent, and a relaxed afternoon at the riad. Day 8 adds a full guided visit of Marrakech with a local guide. The result is a journey that covers the full diversity of Morocco at a comfortable pace, allowing you to truly enjoy each destination.
Pickup from Tangier airport, port, or hotel. The road winds through the Rif Mountains — one of the most beautiful landscapes in North Africa — until we reach Chefchaouen, the mountain town whose medina is painted in shades of blue ranging from sky blue to indigo. Upon arrival, check in to your riad and the rest of the afternoon is free to explore at your own pace: the 15th-century kasbah, Uta el-Hammam square, artisan souks selling wool and leather, and the most photographed streets in the country.
Overnight in a riad in Chefchaouen.
Breakfast and a scenic drive through Berber villages of the Rif. First stop is Volubilis, Morocco’s most impressive Roman archaeological site: 3rd-century polychrome mosaics — the Dionysus scene, the procession of Venus, the labors of Hercules — among the best preserved in the western Mediterranean. The Arch of Caracalla and the Capitol complete the visit. Then Meknes: built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail as his imperial capital, featuring Bab el Mansour — one of the most monumental gates in the Islamic world — and the Sultan’s Mausoleum, open to non-Muslims and remarkably serene. Lunch in Meknes. Arrival in Fes by evening.
Overnight in a riad in Fes.
A local expert guide accompanies a full-day tour of Fes. The visit begins at the golden gates of the Royal Palace and continues into the UNESCO-listed medina. Key highlights include: the University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world; the Al Attarine Madrasa with its intricate stucco and woodwork; the Nejjarine Fountain in the carpenters’ square; the Chouara tanneries with their iconic dye vats viewed from leather merchants’ terraces; the Jewish quarter (Mellah); and Borj Nord fortress for a panoramic view over the sea of rooftops.
Overnight in a riad in Fes.
Breakfast and early departure south. Ifrane, the charming alpine town of the Middle Atlas. Cedar forest of Azrou with Barbary macaques freely approaching visitors. Lunch on the way. Ziz Valley with its endless palm groves marking the beginning of the desert. Arrival in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Camels await at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset ride to the luxury camp. Stop on a high dune for sunset, arrival at camp, welcome tea, private tent, dinner, and an evening around the fire with Berber drum music.
Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Breakfast. Full-day 4×4 desert excursion. First stop: Khamlia, the Gnawa village, whose inhabitants descend from Sub-Saharan African slaves and preserve a musical tradition of rhythm and trance rooted in Sudan and Mali. Live performance with drums and singing. Second stop: the abandoned village of M’Fis and its old galena mines, the mineral used by Berbers to produce kohl eyeliner. Third stop: a nomadic Berber family living in a traditional tent beyond the dunes — tea with them and insight into a life without electricity or running water.
Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon at the riad — pool or walk in the dunes. Optional quad or buggy activity at sunset.
Overnight in a riad in Merzouga.
Breakfast at the riad. Rissani souk if the day falls on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday — a fully authentic Berber market selling dates, livestock, ceramics, and spices. Panorama of the Tinghir oasis. Todra Gorge: 300-meter-high limestone cliffs with just ten meters between them at the narrowest point. A short walk in one of North Africa’s most impressive canyons. In the afternoon, Dades Gorges with the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations.
Overnight in a hotel in the Dades Gorges.
Departure after breakfast. Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa”: optional visit to Atlas Studios, filming location for Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator, and many more productions. Ait Ben Haddou: a 17th-century clay ksar and UNESCO World Heritage Site, featured in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Guided walking exploration. Lunch. Crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass to Marrakech. First free evening — dinner in Jemaa el-Fna square.
