PRIVATE 4-DAY DESERT TOUR FROM FES TO MARRAKECH

PRIVATE TOUR — PRIVATE 4-DAY DESERT TOUR FROM FES TO MARRAKECH
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Four days from Fes to Marrakech — the most recommended version of the desert crossing. The main difference compared to the 3-day tour is Day 2, which is fully dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert: a visit to a Berber nomad family, the abandoned village of M’Fis with its galena mines, Gnawa music in Khamlia, and a camel ride at sunset to the luxury camp. The rest of the route follows the same itinerary through the Todra Gorge, the Dades Gorges, Ait Ben Haddou, and the High Atlas to Marrakech.

DAY 1: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA

Pickup from Fes at 8:00 AM. Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Cedar forest of Azrou with Barbary macaques. Lunch en route. Ziz Valley with its endless palm groves. Arrival in Merzouga in the late afternoon.

Overnight in a riad in Merzouga.

DAY 2: FULL DAY EXPLORATION OF THE MERZOUGA DESERT

Sunrise from the riad terrace overlooking the Erg Chebbi dunes. Breakfast followed by a full-day 4×4 desert exploration. First stop is Khamlia, the Gnawa village: its inhabitants descend from sub-Saharan African slaves and preserve a unique musical tradition of rhythm and trance with roots in Sudan and Mali. The live performance with drums and songs is a truly unique experience. Then the abandoned village of M’Fis and its old galena mines — the mineral used by Berber people to produce kohl for eye makeup since ancient times. Next, a visit to a nomadic family living in a traditional tent beyond the dunes: sharing tea and learning about a lifestyle preserved unchanged for generations.

Lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, camels await for the ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes to the luxury camp at sunset. Stop on a high dune to watch the sunset and try sandboarding on the slopes. Arrival at the camp, private tent, dinner, and an evening around the campfire with Berber music under the desert sky.

Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → TODRA GORGE → DADES GORGES

Sunrise over the dunes. Breakfast at the camp and return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4. If the day coincides with market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), we stop at the traditional Rissani souk to explore its streets filled with spices, ceramics, textiles, and local products found nowhere else. Continue to Tinghir for panoramic views of the oasis and its adobe kasbahs, then the Todra Gorge: 300-meter-high limestone cliffs with barely ten meters between them at the narrowest point. A short but impressive walk. In the afternoon, the Dades Gorges with the eroded “monkey fingers” rock formations.

Overnight in a hotel in the Dades Gorges.

DAY 4: DADES GORGES → KALAAT M’GOUNA → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS → MARRAKECH

Departure after breakfast along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Kalaat M’Gouna, the Rose Valley, with its rose fields visible from the road in spring. Ouarzazate: optional visit to Atlas Studios, the world’s largest film studio. Ait Ben Haddou: walking exploration of the 17th-century clay ksar declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featured in Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones. Lunch. Crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass to Marrakech.

End of the 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech.
