PRIVATE 2-DAY DESERT TOUR FROM FES TO MARRAKECH

PRIVATE TOUR — 2-DAY DESERT TOUR FROM FES TO MARRAKECH
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Two days from Fes to Marrakech via the Merzouga Desert — the most compact option for travelers who need to move between cities while still experiencing the Sahara along the way. Day 1 crosses the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley to reach Merzouga for sunset and an overnight stay in a desert camp. Day 2 returns via Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech — approximately 9 hours of driving. Both days involve long travel distances, so if time allows, the 3-day version is much more comfortable and offers a richer experience of southern Morocco.

  • DURATION: 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT
  • START: FES
  • END: MARRAKECH
  • TOUR TYPE: PRIVATE
  • Ifrane and the cedar forest with Barbary macaques
  • Ziz Valley and the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Camel ride at sunset and luxury desert camp
  • Sunrise over the dunes
  • Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah (UNESCO World Heritage Site, panoramic stop)
  • Crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass
DAY 1: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA → LUXURY CAMP

Pickup from your riad in Fes early in the morning. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas with a stop in Ifrane, the alpine town known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its architecture and mountain climate. Then continue to the cedar forest of Azrou: Barbary macaques live freely among the trees and often approach visitors with surprising confidence. Lunch at a restaurant along the route.

We continue through the Tizi n’Talghemt Pass and along the Ziz Valley — a panorama of palm groves that signals the beginning of the desert south. Arrival in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Camels are waiting. The journey to the luxury camp crosses the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun sets and colors the sand golden. Stop on a high dune for sunset, then continue to the camp. Welcome tea, private tent, dinner, drum music around the campfire, and a sky free of light pollution.

Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.

DAY 2: MERZOUGA → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS → MARRAKECH

Sunrise from the camp or a nearby dune. Breakfast and return to Merzouga by 4×4. This is a long travel day: the route goes southwest to Ouarzazate and continues to Ait Ben Haddou, the clay fortress ksar declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and featured in films such as The Mummy, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones. A stop is made for panoramic photos from the viewpoint — there is no time to visit the interior. Lunch in Ouarzazate or near Ait Ben Haddou.

In the afternoon, ascend the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, with spectacular views over both southern and northern Morocco. Arrival in Marrakech and drop-off at your riad or hotel in the late afternoon.

End of the 2-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech.
