Five days from Fes to Marrakech — the most authentic and off-the-beaten-path tour in this category. What makes this itinerary different is Day 4, which leaves the main roads completely to go off-road through the Bou Tharar Valley to Kelaat M’Gouna, including a visit to a Berber nomad family living in a mountain cave — an experience not included in any standard itinerary. Day 5 adds the Telouet Kasbah to the usual route, the former stronghold of the El Glaoui family in the heart of the High Atlas.
All off-road sections require 4×4 SUVs — the entire itinerary is operated exclusively in Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX vehicles, with a maximum of 4 travelers per vehicle.
Pickup in Fes at 8:00 AM. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas with a stop in Ifrane, the picturesque alpine town known as the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Then continue to the cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary macaques — the only wild primates in North Africa — live freely among the cedars. Lunch en route. Tizi n’Talghemt Pass and the Ziz Valley with its impressive palm groves. Arrival in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Camel ride at sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes, stop on a high dune for sunset, then arrival at the luxury camp. Welcome tea, private tent, dinner, music, and campfire.
Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
Sunrise from the nearest dune ridge to the camp. Breakfast. Full-day 4×4 excursion: Khamlia with its Gnawa music rooted in sub-Saharan traditions, the abandoned village of M’Fis and its galena mines, a visit to a nomadic family in their traditional tent — tea and conversation about a life far from modern civilization — and the flamingo lake if seasonally available. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon at the riad with pool or a walk in the dunes.
Overnight in a riad in Merzouga.
Breakfast at the riad. Rissani souk if it falls on a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday). Panorama of the Tinghir oasis. Todra Gorge: 300-meter-high canyon walls with a river running through them. Dades Gorges with the “monkey fingers” rock formations. Optional guided hiking through the Monkey Fingers canyon.
Overnight in a hotel in the Dades Gorges.
Morning free time to explore the Dades Gorges. Then off-road through the Bou Tharar Valley — a 4×4-only route leading into a completely remote mountain world. Here we visit a Berber nomadic family living in a cave — possibly the most unique experience of the entire itinerary: tea with them, conversation with the guide’s help, and a glimpse into a lifestyle unchanged for centuries. Continue to Kelaat M’Gouna, the Rose Valley, surrounded by blooming rose fields in spring. Skoura: the historic oasis with Amridil Kasbah, one of the best-preserved kasbahs in southern Morocco and a former stop on trans-Saharan caravan routes. Arrival in Ouarzazate in the afternoon.
Overnight in a hotel in Ouarzazate.
Breakfast. Ouarzazate: visit to Taourirt Kasbah, the former residence of the Glaoui family with its partially preserved decorated rooms, and optional visit to Atlas Studios. Ait Ben Haddou: 17th-century clay ksar and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, featured in The Mummy, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Walking exploration inside the ksar. Lunch. The High Atlas road leads to Telouet Kasbah — the former palace of the El Glaoui family, who ruled southern Morocco during the French protectorate, with its still-visible zellij tilework and carved plaster rooms in a state of romantic decay. Crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and arrival in Marrakech.
End of the 5-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech.
