GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Four days from Ouarzazate to Marrakech through the heart of the Sahara. The main difference compared to the 3-day tour is the full day dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert: a 4×4 journey through the deep dunes, a visit to a Berber nomadic family living near the Algerian border, and an encounter with the Gnawa community of Khamlia — descendants of sub-Saharan slaves who preserve a unique musical tradition. This tour is the best option among Ouarzazate trips for travelers seeking an authentic Sahara experience without having much time, combining historic kasbahs, spectacular gorges, and real immersion in desert culture.
DAY 1: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → DADES GORGES
Pickup from Ouarzazate Airport or your hotel to begin the 4-day tour to Merzouga. First stop at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a mud-brick ksar declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a filming location for many movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and the famous Game of Thrones. After lunch in the village of Ait Ben Haddou, we continue the journey toward the Dades Gorges, passing through Ouarzazate and following the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Arrival in the evening.
Overnight in a hotel or riad in the Dades Gorges.
DAY 2: DADES GORGES → TODRA GORGE → MERZOUGA DESERT
Breakfast and departure to the Todra Gorge, where we take a walking tour at the base of the canyon surrounded by 300-meter-high limestone cliffs. We continue our journey to Merzouga. Upon arrival, an experienced camel guide awaits with dromedaries at the edge of Erg Chebbi for a camel trek of approximately 30 minutes across the dunes to the camp. Dinner with local hosts and overnight under the Sahara stars.
Overnight in a desert camp in Merzouga.
DAY 3: FULL DAY EXPLORATION OF THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Breakfast at the camp and return by camel to Merzouga. The desert exploration day begins in a 4×4 vehicle that takes us deep into areas not reached by standard tours. During the day we visit a Berber nomadic family living in a traditional tent near the Morocco–Algeria border — sharing tea, conversation, and a unique insight into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. We then head to the village of Khamlia, home to descendants of sub-Saharan slaves, where we enjoy live Gnawa music — hypnotic rhythms of drums and chants that form part of southern Morocco’s intangible heritage, and spend time with the local community.
Overnight in a hotel or riad in Merzouga.
DAY 4: MERZOUGA → OUARZAZATE → MARRAKECH
Breakfast at the hotel and start of the final day of the Ouarzazate to Merzouga tour, returning to Marrakech. Several scenic stops along the way while crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Arrival in Marrakech around 7:00 PM and transfer to your accommodation.
End of the 4-day tour from Ouarzazate to Merzouga.
